In 1972, I was a first-year student at the University of Western Ontario, aiming to become a physical education teacher. I felt well-suited to that career. I was a graduate of the YMCA’s leadership program, a swimming instructor and lifeguard, and an average player in most sports.
Strategically, my plan “B” was a career in law enforcement, and in May of 1972, I was accepted into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Over the next 32 years, I worked conducting general investigations in several Manitoba detachments, investigated immigration and drug offences for several years, and, with the advent of technology, shifted into criminal intelligence. I retired in 2005 as the Ottawa Director in charge of the organized crime intelligence and serious crime branch.
In 2019, I wrote a memoir of my career with the RCMP and beyond, and in those pages, I described seeing my future wife for the first time in the rear view mirror of my police car, our courtship and life together and the gift of our two daughters. The work environment and transfers were challenging at times, but at this writing, Terry and I have been married 51 years, and our daughters are happy and successful in careers and family life.
Post-retirement, Terry and I started a business, ci2i consulting. Ci2i is my acronym for “changing information to intelligence.” For Terry and her personal coaching clients, the acronym means ” Changing Imagination to Inspiration.”
As a highlight of our retirement, I was fortunate to obtain several full-time and part-time law enforcement capacity-building contracts in Southeast Asia. We were both actively working until the pandemic of 2020 put the brakes on most opportunities.
